SOUTHERN CORSICA TOUR TERRA MEDITERRANEA

Authentic tour in the history and culture

You cannot have a true picture of Corsica without setting foot on this sun-soaked island. Beautiful white sandy beaches, coves, calm seas...but that is not the whole story. Present day Corsica evolved in the western Mediterranean basin more than 11000 years ago.
This road trip will take you on a timeless journey to Southern Corsica, offering you the wonderful experience of a place where numerous ancient civilisations have left evidence of their life and work. The heritage of Corsica is essentially an exceptional mineral one-so many citadels, houses, churches, towers, low walls, bridges and mills - all made from sculpted and dry stone.
The best way to discover Corsica is by exploring its unspoilt landscapes, its historical and cultural heritage which is as well-preserved in the coastal areas as it is inland. Go on excursions, take time to stop and relax and your holiday in Corsica will be unforgettable.

DAY 1 - Arrival in Corsica
The first two days of your holiday will be spent in the imperial town of Ajaccio, birthplace of Napoleon.

DAY 2- Ajaccio, the Mediterranean beauty
Enjoy a stroll round Place Foch(Palm Tree Square), taking in the colourful stalls of the morning street market, the fishing boats in Tino Rossi marina and fishing port, the citadel... wander round the historic quarter and let the warmth of the sun convince you that your Mediterranean holiday has truly begun!. Visit the important art collection in Maison Napoleon Bonaparte and Palais Joseph Fesch, a great art-collector and uncle of Emperor Napoleon 1st. West of Ajaccio is La Parata Point, a place where the locals like to take a stroll - with its great view of the Sanguinaires Islands. Treat yourself to a boat trip to get an even better view of the islands bath in a dark red light as the sun goes down.

DAY 3 - Genoese towers and the mysterious menhirs of Filitosa
Head South to discover a significant megalithic site on land owned by the Cesari family. These menhirs fascinated archaeologists like Roger Grosjean who worked hard to make the stones "speak" and attest to the fact that they were built by island's earliest inhabitants. To fully appreciate the site, try to imagine and understand the significance of this group of stones and statues, to picture a village during the Torrean civilisation spread out over a great park of olive and oak trees.
The itinerary takes you to another building from another period, Campomoro Tower, one of the largest of the 90 Genoese towers dotted around Corsica, which were an effective defence against any possible barbarian invasion. From the top of the tower you have a superb view over the Gulf of Valinco and the beautiful beaches.
Overnight stay in Propriano.

DAY 4 - The Alta Rocca, culture and authenticity
From Propriano, we head for L' Alta Rocca. Nicknamed "Land of the Lords" in medieval times, it reveals the exceptional beauty of inland Corsica. Today's trip takes you through numerous villages steeped in tradition. Evidence of the Mesolithic period is displayed in the Levie Museum : among other exhibits, theskeleton of the Lady of Bonifacio, dating from 7500 ago. In  the village of Serra di Scopamena, you can see a water mill and also numerous old chestnut -drying rooms.
Return to Propriano.

DAY 5 - Bonifacio and the far south
Today's route takes you back to the extreme south via Sartene and from the road you will be able to see some very unusual geological structures, caused by erosion, such as the Roccapina lion!. You will go on to the old town of Bonifacio whose claim to fame is to be perched on a limestone rock like a ship overlooking the sea. A boat trip is the best way to fully appreciate this splendid rock formation as well as the cliffs and the famous King of Aragon Steps.
Onward to Porto-Vecchio for the next three nights.

DAY 6 - Porto-Vecchio
Wander around this pretty old walled 'City of Salt', so called because of its industry of salt production. Today's excursion takes you to L'Oriu di Canni, a prehistoric troglodyte rocky shelter whose strange shape has been hewn by erosion and which has been used throughout time by nomads moving their flockts from region to region.

DAY 7 - Day of relaxation
