La Balagne, in the north offers such a wide canvas – here, with the deep blue sea of the Mediterranean, stone villages built into the hills of the hinterland, terraced gardens, mountains, -there is enough variety to appeal to every single member of the family.
Our aim is to show you the island’s cultural traditions and its carefully preserved natural landscape. Day 1: Escape to Calvi
Arrival on the island and picking up your holiday rental car.
Your accommodation for the duration of your holiday is a well-appointed house near Calvi. You will feel immediately at home in this warm Mediterranean setting and there is a pool for the whole family to enjoy. Explore the Genoese town and take a stroll around the town walls to get a panoramic view of the area where you will be spending your holiday.
Day 2: A taste of the South
A relaxing day on L' Ile Rousse, founded by Pascal Paoli. Soak up the Mediterranean atmosphere as you amble through the side streets, into the covered market, around the square lined with plane trees where people are playing petanque, then head out to the Pietra lighthouse which will give you a bird’s eye view of the whole island. Wander amongst the Mediterranean flora and look out for myrtle, immortelle….and don’t miss the olive groves in the Parc de Saleccia. Have lunch near the beach on L' Ile Rousse, enjoy your first siesta under the shade of a parasol, and then take a swim in the clear blue water.
Day 3 : Sports and relaxation
La Balagne is the perfect centre for water sports. Each member of the family can try out a new water activity: diving, sailboarding, dinghy sailing, kayaking…..
Or perhaps the tranquil, green setting of the 9 hole golf course appeals….
In the hotel, you could indulge in some relaxing spa treatments or invigorating exercise sessions: sauna, hammam, massage…
Day 4: Along the bridlepaths of Balagne
Enjoy a visit to a farm and its animals, followed by a walk with in the charming company of…. four legs and a pair of big ears! Your guide will take you to one of the most beautiful authentic villages in Balagne where you will be rewarded with one of the best views over the gulf of Calvi.
Day 5 : The tradition of the hinterlands
The inland landscape of Balagne takes you through orchards, olive groves and each time you come to a village you feel as though you are going back in time. Whether perched on a promontory like a castle, or nestled into a hillside, each one has retained its authenticity, its history and its soul. Corbara is one example, once the capital of Balagne, Pigna another. As you wander along the cobbled streets you will come across numerous artists plying their trade : pottery, music boxes, ceramics….and a museum which houses examples of the area’s exceptionally rich and artistic heritage.
Day 6: The refreshing Bonifatu forest
A day in a different setting, this one a world of minerals and greenery: Bonifatu forest. As you walk along the pathways in the shade of the maritime pines, you will appreciate the freshness of this place and you can take a dip in the river (which is also fresh!).
Day 7: Corsica's exclusive oil
The cultivation of olive trees in Corsica dates back to ancient times and is still a proud tradition in Balagne today. Visit U Fragnu and its traditional oil mill; learn about its history, its products and how it works.
Day 8: The end of the holiday ....or will it continue...?
